A Month to The Day...

Hello Lovelies,

It is a month to the day until my first day of Medical School Orientation. I wonder, will I fit in with my classmates? Will I make friends? What if nobody likes me? Or what if the only people who like me are people that I don't like? Will school be as hard as I think it will be? What if I don't remember anything at all from my undergrad science courses? What if I fail my first exam? What if I fail my second exam? What if I fail my whole first semester? Will med school orientation be as annoying and campy as my undergrad orientation was? Will I be able to sleep the night before? What exactly does one wear to the first day of medical school orientation? What does one wear to the second day of orientation?  Is it professional dress, or casual?

Will there be group 'bonding' activities? Or just campus tours and talks from the dean, and lots of paperwork to sign? What does one wear to the first day of medical school class? Will I have a better chance of meeting people like myself if I sit in the front of the class, or the middle of the class, or the back of the class? Does it really matter where I sit? Of course it matters, it always matters, I'm just not sure why it matters... but most certainly it matters! Do I need to buy scrubs for anatomy lab? Do they have to be a certain color? Oh my gosh anatomy lab... can I really dissect 60 cadavers in two years? Can I spend hours and hours looking at a body and not feel creeped out? Will it be scary in anatomy lab when I go in to study after class hours and before exams and when it's dark outside? Do I need more workout type clothes for OMM lab? Will it be awkward to practice manipulation techniques on my classmates? What if I'm sweaty? What if they're sweaty? What if I get off the table and leave a big sweat ring behind me (okay I know the answer to that one I will just die of embarrassment and perhaps stop attending class)?  Will I have to wear goggles again for the other lab classes? Am I going to have to get really good at cleaning out test tubes and beakers again? Will I have to wear a lab coat like we did for microbiology and organic chemistry? How does one get involved in research during medical school?  Should I carry a back pack or a messenger bag or just a tote bag with what I need for each class and then switch the items in my car between classes? Will I be lame for packing my own lunch every day? Are the lectures video recorded for later listening? What kind of sphygmomanometer do I need? What kind of stethoscope do I need?

I feel as though I'm swimming around in a sea of questions... okay, a sea of EXCITEMENT and a sea of questions :)

You will fit in great! They will love you! If not, you don't need them!

You'll be just fine! Mr. B couldn't hardly sleep the night before and he had a lot of the same questions as you do. There are all sorts of people who go to medical school, so I am positive you will find friends who like you and who you like back! :) It all works out in the end, Promise.

Oh, and everyone else who is headed to the orientation is just as nervous as you are, seriously. Mr. B wore business casual, if that helps you at all.

Best of luck!! XOXO

You are going to do GREAT! And you will definitely make good friends.

I can help with the clothes issues... My husband wore business casual clothes - like khakis and a button down - to class most days, and on days where they met with standardized patients he'd wear a tie. You should get a white coat - or two - from the med school. And you will need scrubs for anatomy lab. You can buy them at Wal-Mart or a uniform store. Try to get the light blue ones, which seems to be what most doctors wear. But I am sure you will find out all this stuff at orientation! All your colleagues will have the same questions and they'll be just as nervous.

Medical school was hard for my husband - he studied a lot. But he also was able to find a good balance, so he could have some fun as well. You'll find your balance.

So excited for you!!!
